Aux premiers abords, Valdis Story : Abyssal City se présente comme un action-RPG en scrolling horizontal non sans rappeler les Castlevania 2D d’antan (RIP). Inspiration également assumée par une esthétique old school offrant un rendu des plus séduisants. Lorsqu’on me prend par les sentiments…
Version PC 15 h de jeuPuisque je l’ai déjà évoqué, commençons par la forme. Valdis Story se pare d’une 2D léchée ravivant la nostalgie d’une époque révolue. Les sprites sont magnifiques, les décors superbes, l’animation et les effets irréprochables, bref, ça en jette ! Petit bémol : le titre n’est pas conçu en haute définition donc je vous déconseille de brancher votre PC sur le home cinéma du salon. Qu’importe, le rendu général conforté par un design charmant et coloré apporte un cachet déjà sympathique au titre.
Sur le fond, les inspirations sont diverses. Le déroulement suit un schéma type Metroidvania, et au fil des capacités/objets clés récupérés de nouveaux lieux deviendront accessibles. On reviendra donc souvent sur nos pas pour accéder à une salle auparavant inabordable, en s’appuyant sur la traditionnelle map détaillant notre pourcentage de progression. Toutefois, si l’exploration est mise en avant, Valdis Story : Abyssal City apporte également un aspect RPG bien prononcé aux nombreuses subtilités. Car en sus de points d’expérience, d’un arbre de compétences exhaustif, et d’une répartition des statistiques selon vos critères favoris, il faudra composer avec d’autres paramètres moins courants.
Les magies tout d’abord. Ces dernières sont associées aux touches directionnelles du pad et, selon la direction pressée, génèrent un effet particulier. Prenons un exemple. La magie de glace utilisée vers le bas aura pour conséquence de créer un bloc, permettant ainsi de grappiller quelques mètres afin d’atteindre un lieu haut perché. Certains résultats sont donc directement liés à la progression ! Ajoutez en vrac un système de dash indispensable, une gestion de l’inventaire et des matériaux, l’upgrade des équipements, de nombreuses phases de plates-formes exigeantes et autres détails que j’ai la flemme d’expliquer ici, pour obtenir un gameplay aux petits oignons ! Bourré de bonnes idées, le jeu se prend vite en main et les sensations sont vraiment jouissives. Car Abyssal City puise aussi dans le Beat’em all. En résulte des combats très dynamiques jouant sur les combinaisons de touches pour réaliser des combos dévastateurs. Notons aussi un système de ranking après chaque boss qui déterminera les récompenses. Enfin, le fait de pouvoir aborder le jeu avec quatre personnages différents au gameplay propre accentue ce côté Beat’em all à monde ouvert.
Si la plupart des zones sont peuplées d’ennemis et de boss impitoyables (au passage : mention très bien pour le bestiaire stylé), vous traverserez aussi des villages composés de magasins et divers PNJs qui vous confieront leurs petits problèmes. Ayant explosé mon quota de caractères pour mettre en évidence le gameplay génial de Valdis Story, je ne m’attarderais pas sur le scénario pourtant fort intéressant. L’histoire nous place au milieu d’une guerre entre anges et démons où les humains jouent le rôle de victimes collatérales impuissantes. Membre d’un équipage de combattants aguerris, votre navire se fait attaquer et vous échouez dans une cité sacrée remplie de mystères. Vous partez alors en quête de vos alliés disparus qui, à la manière d’un Suikoden, rejoindront ensuite votre base et monnaieront parfois des services très intéressants. On notera un background recherché s’inspirant de diverses mythologies, mis en évidence par une direction artistique de bon goût.
L’aventure prend ainsi des airs variés : d’une prison lugubre à une grotte souterraine, en passant par des contrées glacées ou un laboratoire empoisonné, le dépaysement sera total. Un level design de qualité parachève la cohérence de l’ensemble, d’où émerge une ambiance onirique et mystique fort plaisante. La bande son apporte sa contribution à l’atmosphère divine du titre, en proposant même, outre quantité de pistes d’ambiance réussies, quelques thèmes magistraux.
Il m’aura fallu une petite quinzaine d’heures pour compléter mon run et flirter avec un pourcentage parfait d’exploration. S’ajoute l’intérêt de refaire l’aventure avec un personnage différent, de soigner son rang contre les boss, ou encore de s’essayer à un mode de difficulté plus exigeant. Au rayon des petits défauts on regrettera l’absence d’une map monde générale et les moyens de téléportations assez limités, nuisant un peu au confort de jeu.
D’abord porté par un gameplay profond et une réalisation chatoyante, d’autres atouts font de Valdis Story : Abyssal City une expérience rafraîchissante à l’identité prononcée. Équilibre quasi parfait entre action-RPG et Beat’em all, la performance est d’autant plus remarquable qu’elle résulte d’un modeste financement participatif. En contrepartie l’ensemble manque peut-être un peu d’envergure pour se révéler véritablement marquant. Il n’en reste pas moins un excellent titre que j’ai dévoré sans retenue.
